Election signage rules

All posters and signage containing electoral material must comply with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 Division 2, Subdivision 13 - Election signs.  

Election signage must not be placed on public property. City rangers may remove signs from public property.  

Signs can be on private property or attached to fences and walls of houses or commercial buildings with the owner's consent, provided they adhere to size limitations and are not attached to heritage or draft heritage items.  

Election signs can be displayed only in the following periods: 

  • in the 8 weeks leading up to election day
  • on election day 
  • in the week immediately following election day. 

Election signs must not be: 

  • more than 0.8 square meters, unless they are in a rural zone, where they must not exceed 3.75 square meters 
  • displayed on Council's road reserves (either free-standing pole signs or those affixed to trees or street furniture) 
  • displayed on a trailer parked on a road or road-related areas 
  • affixed to an electricity pole owned by an electricity provider 
  • attached to a building on the site of a heritage item of draft heritage item in any location that poses a danger to the public. 

Signs that do not comply with the above rules may result in enforcement action and be removed attracting a fee for retrieval. Any signs remaining one week after the election will be removed and may result in a fine.
