Living with kangaroos in Coffs Harbour
The Coffs Harbour region is home to important populations of Kangaroos, including the Eastern Grey Kangaroo.
You will likely come across mobs of roos in residential areas, caravan parks, holiday parks and golf courses at a number of locations along the Coffs Harbour Northern Beaches.
Kangaroos graze in many parks and gardens in our area. Please respect them. They are mostly docile but ...like many wild animals they may become aggressive if disturbed.
- KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
- Do not attempt to feed kangaroos
- Always supervise children and dog.
- Watch where you walk to ensure kangaroos are not startled or cornered
Be kangaroo aware
- Avoid kangaroos that are mating, sparring, growling, clucking or with a joey
- Males are large, powerful animals that try to fight off other males
- When courting or mating with females they may see a standing person with arms outstretched as a rival
- If you feel threatened by a kangaroo retreat in a crouched or crawling position to a safe distance
- If you are under attack drop to the ground and curl up into a ball with your hands protecting your face and throat
Kangaroo Management Plan for the Coffs Harbour Northern Beaches area
The Kangaroo Management Plan for the Coffs Harbour Northern Beaches was developed in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc (WIRES), to address issues relating to populations of kangaroos living within, and in close proximity to, human population centres on the Coffs Harbour Northern Beaches.

Living with kangaroos education resources
Whilst most interactions with kangaroos are positive, negative interactions may occur and Coffs Harbour residents have requested more information and advice about living safely with kangaroos and avoiding potential conflict.
In response, members of the Coffs Harbour Kangaroo Management Committee have used an Environmental Levy grant to develop a range of educational resources to raise community awareness, using insights gained from the 2016 Kangaroo Community Survey. You can download these resources below.
