Laundry and kitchen
About 15-20% of water used in the house is used in the laundry and about 10% is used in the kitchen. To save money on your water bills, consider the following tips.
Laundry
- The most effective way to save water in the laundry is to use a front-load washing machine. Using a front-load washing machine could save you 100 litres a wash.
- The higher the WELS rating the more water efficient the machine.
- Always wait until you have a full load before using the washing machine.
- Set your washing machine for the lowest water level possible for the load you are washing.
- Fit an aerator or flow restrictor to your laundry tub taps.
Kitchen
- Use a container or small amount of water in your sink for washing vegetables rather than cleaning under a running water.
- Remove food scraps by scraping into compost bin instead of rising under the tap.
- To avoid wasting drinking water from a running tap, collect it in a bottle or jug and store it in the fridge.
- Only use the dishwasher when you have a full load.
- When purchasing a new dishwasher, check the water efficiency (WELS) label, the higher the number of stars, the more water efficient it is.
- Collect water while waiting for the hot to come through and use it to water plants and rinse dishes or wash fruit and vegetables.
