On average, every person uses about 150 litres of treated water in the workplace every day.  That's 16 full buckets per person per day, which is 30% of our total water usage.

Most of the water used in factories, commercial buildings, educational institutions and other workplaces goes in air conditioning, food processing and manufacturing processes, but a significant portion is also used for cleaning, food and drink preparation, gardening, and in toilets and washrooms. No matter where you work, you can help save water by adopting water-efficient practices, and ensuring that work processes do not waste water.

Workplace water rating

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) is a performance-based rating system for existing buildings. NABERS provides tools to help workers in several different types of businesses to rate the environmental impact, including water efficiency, of their workplaces. Currently, it is possible to rate:

  • apartment buildings
  • office buildings/tenancies
  • shopping centres
  • hotels
