City of Coffs Harbour will host a regular season NAB AFL Women’s match for the first time in what is seen as a boon for both the City and the Sydney Swans.
The draw for the 2024 season was released by the AFL today and it includes several innovations, including a showcase event at the C.ex Coffs Harbour International Stadium on September 14.
“This is dazzling news and it will bring a handsome dividend to the community as we will be striving for a sellout crowd,” City of Coffs Harbour City Planning and Communities Director Chris Chapman said.
“We’ve had a superb relationship with the Swans and this announcement will take that bond next level.”
The red and whites have been rewarded for their stellar star factor last year after being named for the season opener against Collingwood at North Sydney Oval on Friday, 30 August.
Each club will play 11 home and away games across a 10-week period, seeing the introduction of some mid-week clashes.
The Swans will face St Kilda after the Pies before heading to Coffs to face Richmond.
"We're really excited to be hosting our Week 3 match in Coffs Harbour,” Sydney Swans CEO Tom Harley said.
“Having hosted AFL and AFLW pre-season camps in the region over the last 20 years it's brilliant to be bringing a match for premiership points to our members and fans in the area.
“Our relationship with Coffs Harbour has been pivotal for the development of our QBE Sydney Swans academy and ARA First Nations Foundations Program and it's great to have another opportunity to engage participants in the area."
September 14 will be a busy day across NSW as it coincides with the local government elections.
“We’ll be encouraging people to vote and then head along for a great afternoon at the footy where history will be made at Coffs,” Mr Chapman said.
The Swans’ ties with Coffs were underlined earlier this year when a number of their elite male players visited the Harry Bailey Memorial Library as part of a club preseason stay here.
