Jetty Foreshores

Keep the Foreshores public

Property and Development NSW plans to rezone and sell up to 4.2 hectares of public land at the Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshores to allow the development of multi-storey buildings with up to 250 private residential dwellings and 200 short stay units.

City of Coffs Harbour Council wants to see land at the Jetty Foreshores developed to provide more recreation, dining, culture and tourism experiences for the community, while being retained in public ownership.

Why?

City of Coffs Harbour Council does not support the rezoning and sale of this community land to allow privately owned residential development because:

  • keeping the land in public ownership will ensure there is space for public recreation as surrounding suburbs are developed

  • it will create access and parking problems in this area which has only one way in and one way out

  • proposed buildings will be higher than allowed in the Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and will dominate and create shadowing over recreational, picnic and parkland areas

  • it does not account for the significance of the Jetty Foreshores to the Aboriginal community

  • part of the land proposed to be developed is within the coastal vulnerability zone, putting the development at odds with the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP)

  • there are many opportunities to develop housing in more appropriate areas surrounding the Jetty Foreshores.

In addition, it is unlikely that the development of 450 dwellings will create secure, well-paid jobs beyond the construction phase. On the other hand, once the land is rezoned and sold, it is permanently taken from future generations to enjoy.

City of Coffs Harbour Council has adopted a Jetty Foreshores concept plan as an indication of what might be possible for the area. It includes:

  • more space for public recreation and car parking by moving Jordan Esplanade to the west

  • low scale commercial development and additional cafes and restaurants etc.

  • tourism, environmental and cultural experiences

  • better access to the beach.

Where to from here?

City of Coffs Harbour has applied to compulsorily acquire the land at the Jetty Foreshores, so it can be retained in public ownership for the people of Coffs Harbour.

The City has the financial capacity to secure the land, to meet the needs of the growing community.

A poll will be held in conjunction with the local government election on 14 September 2024, asking the community to have their say on the future of the Jetty Foreshores. For information about the poll, visit www.coffsharbour.nsw.gov.au/poll2024
